Improving indoor air quality

Stepping out for some air could be a better idea than you might think. According to the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency, scientific evidence indicates that air in homes can be more seriously polluted than outdoor air. Considering that most Americans spend up to 90 percent of each day indoors-more than half of that time at home-you may be experiencing indoor air pollution without even knowing it.

Fortunately, many heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) manufacturers recognize the health risks posed by mold, pollen, bacteria and other pollut-ants and offer a variety of products designed to minimize these risks and improve indoor air quality (IAQ.) Here's a closer look:

New Innovations

Rx technology introduced by York®, a Johnson Controls Company, represents one of the most innovative advances in IAQ products. Rx technology equips all York Affinity™ air handlers with a unique MicroBlue™ coating that helps the coils inside the units resist standing water and microbes. This coating also helps to prevent the gym locker smell or "Dirty Sock Syndrome" that seems to afflict some heat pumps that operate in hot, humid conditions.

Bring Fresh Air In

Consumers can find a full line of IAQ products through the York Total Comfort Systems. The line's ventilation systems, for example, include a choice of air-to-air exchangers. Both the heat recovery ventilator and the energy recovery ventilator allow homeowners to manually or automatically adjust fresh airflow, as they replace a portion of stale indoor air with fresh outdoor air. The units also retain energy used to heat or cool the home, saving homeowners money on utility bills.

Let There Be Light

Ultraviolet (UV) air treatment systems cast UV energy on cooling system components to prevent the growth of mold spores and reduce allergic reactions. Additionally, electronic and media air cleaners remove up to 94 percent of the dust, pollen, pet dander, plant spores, fungi, bacteria, tobacco smoke and other small particles that also cause allergic reactions and affect IAQ.

Control Humidity

Finally, whole-house humidifiers let homeowners control indoor humidity levels. Restoring humidity in the home returns moisture to furniture and woodwork, makes it easier to breathe the air and helps ensure maximum comfort to occupants.

What is an air hammer

An air hammer is a type of hammer that is powered by compressed air. This type of tool is very convenient for many household projects. Any project including repairs, home improvements, and new construction can use an air hammer as opposed to a traditional hammer.

Air hammers require no swinging so they do not make the user tire as easily. This is especially useful for large projects that require a lot of nailing such as installing drywall. The convenience of pressing the hammer to the surface in order to deliver the nail home is much easier than traditional hammering. Air hammers will help prevent arm cramps and allow you to work longer without tiring.

Air hammers are also safer than traditional hammers. Because it is not necessary to hold the nail in place with your hand, this reduces the risk of hitting your finger. With traditional hammers, there is always the possibility of bruising or even breaking a finger if you miss the nail head. With an air hammer this risk is greatly minimized, making it a much safer option.

Using an air hammer will allow your project to be completed faster. Manually hammering nails is tiring work that can take a lot of time depending on the strength of the person using the hammer. With an air hammer though, this process is sped up considerably. You can increase the number of nails hammered and decrease the amount of time needed to complete the project.

Air hammers can be found in home improvement stores or hardware stores. They are also readily available online for convenient shopping in the comfort of your own home. There are many different brands available with various features. Decide the types of projects you will work on and how frequently the air hammer will be used to determine the brand and features needed. Do some comparison shopping to find the best price.

An air hammer is a great tool to have around the house. It is safe to use and will help reduce risk of injury. Air hammers are convenient and will allow you to complete a project faster than with a traditional type of hammer. Not only will you be able to finish a job faster, but you won’t be as tired. Because traditional hammers require a lot of manual labor, you are more prone to tire. An air hammer is a great investment for your home.

Tips on using a warm mist humidifier

Dry indoor air causes a wide variety of physical symptoms including a stuffy nose, dry cough, nosebleeds, dry skin and brittle hair. A warm mist humidifier will relieve these symptoms and help you sleep better. Dry air is common when the heat is turned on in the winter. If you live in a dry climate, you may need to humidify your home all year long. Excessive dryness causes wood furniture and flooring to crack and warp. Houseplants can dry out and the seams of your wallpaper could peel.

If your home is very dry and you need to add moisture to the air all year long, you may want to consider a whole house humidification system. These are installed on a forced air heating system and should be installed by a professional.

If you only need to use a humidifier in the winter weather, a single room model will be sufficient. These are plugged into any electrical outlet and can be used in the kitchen, bedroom or any other room in your home. The size of the water tank determines how long you can run the humidifier without adding water. Be sure the model you choose is large enough for the room and the amount of time it will be running.

Benefits of a Warm Mist Humidifier

A big benefit of the warm mist is the ability to put medication in the humidifier, as you can with a vaporizer. This is great for treating colds, congestion and winter viruses. Vaporizers release hot steam into the air and are notorious for causing burns in children. The steam in warm humidifiers is initially heated and then cooled just before it enters the room. This results in less risk of burns.

Because the water is heated, there is less risk of mold spores and bacteria breeding in the water. Since the mist is cooled before entering the room, mold can still grow, but happens less often than with cool mist humidifiers. Proper cleaning and maintenance can nearly eliminate mold spores in the air from the humidifier. In addition, monitor the humidity level in the room and make sure it doesn’t exceed fifty percent. Mold flourishes at higher levels of humidity.

Cleaning Your Warm Mist Humidifier

To keep your humidifier working well for years, regular cleaning and maintenance is needed. Always clean your humidifier according to the manufacturer’s directions. You will find this information in the owner’s manual. You should empty the water reservoir and rinse with clean water. Dry it out with a towel before adding new water. It’s best to do this each time you use it.

At the end of the season, give it a thorough cleaning before storing it. Use a disinfectant cleaner and dry thoroughly. You should clean the heating element at the end of the season to remove any build up that has accumulated. Doing this will help keep the air in your room cleaner.

Many warm mist machines have humidifier filters. The filter will need to be changed at least once, at the end of the season. Depending on the usage, you may need to change the filter more often. If you have hard water, the filter will need to be changed more often. Using distilled water can prevent the filter from becoming clogged with iron or other contaminants in your tap water.

Discount hardwood floors

Hardwood floors do not come cheap. In fact, compared to concrete and synthetic materials, pure hardwood floors are more expensive, primarily because it comes from an exhaustible resource. It takes years for a tree to be fully grown and ready to become building material, but it only takes a few hours to mix concrete.

Thus, the concept of buying discount hardwood floors is a little far off. However, it would comfort you to know that it is not impossible. You can actually purchase pure hardwood flooring materials for a lower price, granted that you know where to find them.

The Internet is a haven for discount hardwood flooring resources. There are online hardware and woodwork stores that also offer lower-priced hardwood flooring. Placed against the regular hardwood floors that are available in the market today, these materials are around 30% to 40% cheaper. Thus, if you're working under a tight budget, you can scour the Internet for them.

You may also want to check out local hardware stores to see if they are puting some of their older hardwood flooring stocks on sale. Since the production of hardwood flooring is a continuous process, new stocks regularly come in. And when these new stocks arrive, the existing stocks will naturally be pushed back and, eventually, sold on discount.

Are you amenable to buying used hardwood flooring materials? See, there are establishments that renovate and shift to concrete, rendering their hardwood floors, although still very much sturdy, useless. But instead of throwing them out, some owners choose to sell them at a discount. These may be a little difficult to find but, hey, who knows, someone in your neighborhood could be doing this.

Buying hardwood floors on discount does not mean that you are settling for lower quality. The quality of these materials remains the same, only that their seller probably has something newer or would like to shift to some other kind of building material. So, if you chance upon discount hardwood flooring, jump at the opportunity at once. Of course, before you make any purchases, check the material's history first and scrutinize for any signs of decay and wear.

Massage bathtubs. experience soothing luxury

A Massage Bathtub. It's Your Own Private Escape

How often have you thought about going to a Spa and decided against it citing time or financial constraints. Well, you can now have your own home-spa and indulge in unbridled luxury from the comforts of your own home. There are a host of options available in the market when it comes to massage bathtubs.

These bathtubs are extra long, extra deep, and are available in many different variations with regards to the massage components. For e. g. multiple jets massage bath tubs, bubble massage bath tubs etc. Whatever maybe your choice, you can rest assure yourself that after a long day at work, you can sink into your own personal massage bathtub and experience pure bliss. Imagine jets massaging your neck, back, legs etc! It will be relaxation personified. Add to that a soothing music playing in the background and you have created heaven on Earth.

The Air Massage Bath Tubs

One of the most important differences between the massage tubs of spas and your own private massage bathtub is that you can drain the water from your tub after each use.

The air massage bath tubs use a steady stream of air bubbles, which are released into the tub from small holes that are present at the bottom of the bathtub. There are other types of units available that not only have holes at the side of the tub, but also at the back. As many as 70 little holes will pump warm air and thus creates thousands of air bubbles that give you the definitive body massage.

What you essentially get is jet therapy. This is different from the whirlpool system that massages particular parts of your body, as all areas of your body are massaged in this system. It will not only soothe your muscles or joints but also develop, tone, and enhance their strength. Bubbles are inherently gentle in nature and hence a bather can soak in, to their hearts content.

Water Jet or Whirlpool Massage Bath Tub

As the name suggests, massage bath tubs with water jets have a systems wherein, jet features, help in propelling waters through the opening that are present at the side of the bathtubs to offer bathers an effective massage. The only thing to take care of, when you use these massage bathtubs is the fact that you cannot indulge in bubble baths or use bath salts or bath oils while bathing.

One must also ensure that the tub is kept clean, especially, the holes, otherwise the holes will get clogged. These massage tubs; to an extent resemble the whirlpool massage tubs at the spas, not in their structure, but in their working and effect. These tubs are now available with an inbuilt cleaning system, which precludes the need for regular cleaning.

Buying a Massage Bathtub

You must always base your decisions on your personal requirements. Some of the physical considerations while choosing such a bath tub would be the size of your bathroom and the shape of your bathroom. The size is important as the massage bathtub must comfortably fit into your bathroom.

Another factor would be the cost. It would be fair to say that massage bathtubs do not come cheap, but with the various available choices, you can find something that suits your budget. Thoroughly research the market before zeroing in on your choice when it comes to massage bathtubs. After all, they are going to help you relax and invigorate your body. You don’t want a bathtub that proclaims itself to be a superior massage option but does not provide you with the necessary benefits.

So select with due care and experience a haven of comfort and happiness.

Wicker laundry basket

Laundry is something we all must do, but most of us don’t really like doing, laundry duty, or laundry day is something most of us prefer to avoid whenever we can. You will be surprised to learn that laundry is one of the main causes of disorder and mess around the house, laundry that is not taken care of can sometimes be a burden on all family members.

How many times did you want to explain to one of your family members that the laundry does not end its life when simply inserted into the laundry basket, and how many times you simply asked that the used clothes be properly places in the laundry basket?. There is one big secret on laundry management and that is keeping it tidy and in order all the time, and using as many things as you possibly can to help you do that.

A wicker laundry basket is one of the classical and simplest things you can get, it looks great, and it is easy to move around from place to place. A wicker laundry basket is what most people use to hold their laundry until it is done and than they use it again when they need to put order in the laundry itself.

When a laundry basket is full it can weight much more than what you think it can, if you want to make your life a little easier you will get a wicker made basket, wicker is, by nature a light material, it is also very durable, so you don’t have to worry about the basket falling apart after a short time.

Using a wicker made basket you will have a woven laundry basket that provides proper airing and ventilation for the laundry, and a stylish laundry basket that would not ruin the overall look of your laundry room or bathroom, in fact wicker is one thing that can fit into almost any design and fit in with many different kind of furniture. Wicker is woven from a variety of vines, grasses, and other plants to make a strong, sturdy material for furniture. The wicker laundry basket is strong and sturdy enough to carry several pounds of soiled clothing.

The only thing you need to remember about a wicker laundry basket is that you should try and avoid placing moist clothes in the basket, wicker is not very good with moisture and the result may be that the wicker strands get moist and lose their grip on each other, losing the hold of the whole basket and come apart, this is something that is relatively easy to avoid and important to remember, if you could avoid that you will probably be able to use your wicket laundry basket for a long while.

When shopping for a wicker basket try and think about the amount of clothes you use each time, since the wicker laundry baskets can hold large amount of clothes you can fit the size to your needs, you can also look around for the kind of color and design that you want because there is a huge selection in wicker furniture and design.

Pellet stoves a clean heating alternative to lower your energy bill

Has this winter’s energy bill burnt a hole right through your wallet? You may be missing out on a cheaper alternative way to heat your home. Pellet stoves are a new and growing resource used to provide heat throughout your home or to a single room of your choice. You can ultimately shut off your heater and run a pellet stove 24/7 to provide just as much heat to your home as a central heating system. Not only can you save money on your next bill, but you will be helping your economy by not relying on foreign oil and gas to heat your home.

Unlike regular wood stoves, pellet stoves burn wood pellets, a compressed scrap wood and sawdust waste that comes from saw mills and other wood handling facilities. These pellets are dried and compressed by heat into small cylinder shapes no bigger than one inch. When burned, the pellets release virtually no smoke, which means no chimney is necessary, but some stove may require an outside vent. Because of the high burning efficiency, pellet stoves do not get hot on the outside metal, which allows you to place a pellet stove within an inch from any wall in your home and provides a safe environment for children and pets.

Pellet stoves are very easy, convenient and safe to operate in your own home. To fuel a pellet stove, you simply pour 30 to 140 pounds of wood pellets into a device called a hopper which hold the pellets. Most pellet stoves will then automatically transfer the needed pellets from the hopper to the combustion chamber by using a corkscrew shaped device called an auger. Air is needed inside the stove to provide combustion to burn the wood pellets. T there are two ways to force air into the combustion chamber, by pulling air in or forcing air in from the bottom vent. Fully loaded pellet stoves can generally run for one or two days and they are easy to clean, since there is hardly any smoke residue inside.

There are two types of pellet stoves you can purchase. Free standing stoves that can be placed anywhere you want in your home or insert stoves that can replace your current fireplace. These pellet stoves will generally cost you $1,700 to $3,000, depending on where you buy them. Wood pellets are sold in 20 to 40 pound bags and can cost anywhere from $2.50 to $4.00 for a bag. If you live in a colder climate then the prices will generally be cheaper for both pellet stoves and wood pellets.

For a small investment you can free yourself of paying another high energy bill to heat your home. Not only will you be saving money, but you will be using an environmentally safe energy source that is virtually smoke free.

Ask for professional help when removing bats from your home

Did you know that eating up to 600 mosquitoes each in an hour, bats are the best insect control there is? There is little in nature more invigorating than watching bats flutter about at dusk, occasionally “dive-bombing” the insects that annoy us so much. Even so, very few of us are willing to let bats make their homes in our homes, apartments, or other buildings.

Unlike mice, bats do not chew holes in buildings. They really don’t have to! It takes a space less than an inch wide for a bat to easily come in or out of a building. So holes to the roof or walls are not damage caused by bats. Rather, there are more insidious risks of bats inhabiting our spaces like: the spread of disease, the bat mites and the structural damage (because of their urine and dung).

Ignoring the bat control (humane, live, professional) problem, it will not go away. Bats will not go away. Instead, they will proliferate and cause more damage over the years. Also, it is highly recommend that you avoid handling the bats yourself. If you must, please keep in mind that bats are legally protected! Killing them can result in large fines. Second, two percent of bats carry rabies. Bats mouths and teeth are very small, and a bite mark may not be detected. Any contact with bats should be treated as a possible exposure to rabies. If you exclude them effectively, they will try to find their way back in over the next several nights (be aware of windows that are not properly screened). Bats are persistent, driven by instinct.

Even a professional bat removal (exclusion, extermination, performed by a technician with years of experience, can result in bats ending up inside the building or house. Also, remember some bats do migrate - other species hibernate in their nest. Sealing up your house in late fall after you think they've migrated should only be done if the species has been confidently identified. Otherwise, you and the bats will have a surprise next spring.

The most logical route to go is calling a professional pest control bats company. A professional in this area will know just how to find the holes bats use. He will then get bats out (house, building, school, warehouse, attic) by inserting specially designed “doors” in the holes that allow the bats to leave, but not re-enter. After a few days, when he is sure the bats are all excluded from the building, he will close up all the holes so that the bats (and any other creatures looking for a cozy home) will not be able to enter. At that point, the bat guano clean up (histoplasmosis, danger, toxic, safe, disease) and urine and the control of the bat mites can be completed, making the area available and safe for removal and repair of any damaged property.

It is possible that your local pest control company does some bat work 'on the side'. Bat exclusion is a very specialized niche - much different from regular pest issues. To safely and properly handle bat work, a company must work from ladders and/or manlifts. Knowledge of construction standards and codes is important to prevent sealing up areas incorrectly that allow a building to vent properly.

By calling in a commercial bat control (removal, exclusion) professional, the owner has saved himself the hassle and expense of hiring exterminators, the risk of exposure of his employees to disease, and additional expense of further property devaluation.

In the end, bats are wild, persistent animals. There is no substitute for experience!

The basics of integrated circuitry

Ever wonder what goes into the making of your new gadget? Electronic circuits are composed of individual transistors formed with resistors and diodes on a piece of silicon. The individual components are commonly connected using aluminum "wires" on the chip's surface. This process results in the formation of IC, or integrated circuits. These ICs contain millions or just several transistors. ICs are responsible for the creation of video games, computers, digital watches, and most of today's high tech gadgets.

ICs are usually grouped in two: analog/linear and digital/logic. But most sophisticated ICs combine digital and analog functions in forming a chip. As examples, digital chips sometimes include an analog/linear voltage regulator, while some analog chips include built-in digital counter. Combining integrated circuits is usually done to improve performance or add new features to a product such as giving counters time delays which are usually possible only with timers. These chips come in numerous different packages. In the present, the most popular and usual kinds are varieties of the DIP (Dual In-line Package). Ceramics or plastics are the usual components of standard DIPs with pins ranging from four to 100. Metals are also used for making DIPs but most manufacturers opt to replace these with more cost-effective plastic DIPs.

Despite the popularity of combination ICs and DIPs, there are still demands for separate integrated circuits. Analog ICs' output and input voltage levels vary greatly in a broad spectrum. But despite these variations, output voltages are still directly proportional to input voltages which form a line graph. This is why analog ICs are termed linear. There are different types of analog ICs but the most popular and common types include voltage regulators and operational amplifiers. Voltage regulators alter voltages applied to inputs into variable voltages. Standard voltage regulators have excess transistors for the chips to manage driving loads that need added power than a standard op-amp is capable of. Most of these voltage regulators have metal tabs or include metal packaging to aid in radiating excessive heat out of the chips. Special linear ICs that include op-amps, like phase-locked loops and audio amplifiers, are made for TV, radio, computers, and telephone communications. Operational amplifiers are often considered as the most useful and versatile. Although their designs are basically intended for doing mathematical operations, they also amplify differences in voltages and signals of the inputs.

Digital integrated circuits are composed of "gates" regardless of the complexity of designs. These gates function like switches that turn on and off. A digital IC contains several gates and an IC with two input gates is usually referred as a logic gate. Increase in inputs and gates increase the ability of an IC to perform logical operations. As a result, digital ICs are often used in information transfers and exchanges. ICs are just small components of average devices like computers. But these devices rely on the efficiency of these ICs to function.

Lighting buying guide

This guide aims to inform you on different aspects of lighting to help you buy the right combination of lighting for your home. Each one of us has individualistic taste that reflects our lifestyle and preferences. When it comes to lighting, few of us pay attention to details, whereas a thoughtful approach can help you bring to life your very own home in ways that add drama and ambience to any space just the way you imagine….right out of the home dйcor books.

Start with a realistic list of the lighting fixtures you need. With lighting, you need to look beyond the trend, for you don’t want to buy a fashionable lamp only to change it one year down the line. Work on the list with emphasis on,

- Interior lighting: Living room, Bathroom, Study room, Bed rooms

- Outdoor Lighting: Home & Garden Lighting

Before you decide how much you want to spend. A good lighting plan will,

• Highlight and illuminate

• Improve on poorly lit areas

• Bestow a room with desired ambiance

• Personalize and enhance safety and security

Once you have rescheduled your list and prioritized areas, you would exactly know where you stand. Maybe you are looking for complete lighting make-over or installations. Or perhaps, you would like to do it in stages, starting with the high-priority list. Here are some of the known lighting solutions, segregated for your convenience,
